Ledger & Ladder

Personal finance and online income, taught properly

Learn where your money goes, then learn how to earn more of it online.

Two programmes for people who are tired of guessing. One runs in a small group, one runs privately with you alone. Both end with a written money plan and at least one income route you have actually started, not just read about.

The problem

Most money advice is either too vague or trying to sell you something

You have probably already watched dozens of videos about passive income. You may have downloaded a budgeting app, used it for eleven days, and quietly stopped. You may have been told to invest without ever being told what to do first if your income is uneven, or what happens if the car breaks down in month two.

The gap is rarely information. It is sequence. Money decisions only work in a particular order: know your numbers, protect your downside, then build income, then grow it. Skip a step and the next one collapses under you the first time something goes wrong.

This school teaches that sequence, with your real numbers, over a fixed number of weeks, with someone checking your work. Nothing is sold to you at the end. There is no upsell, no affiliate funnel, no private signal group.

What we do not do. We do not manage your money, recommend specific securities, promise a return, or guarantee that you will earn a particular amount. We teach method, and method is worth far more over ten years than any tip.

What you leave with

Six things you will own by the end

Not notes. Working documents you keep using long after the course closes.

A cash-flow picture that is actually true

Every inflow and outflow for the past three months, categorised, with the subscriptions and small leaks you had forgotten. Most people find between 7% and 18% of their spending they cannot account for on the first pass.

A budget shaped like your life

Fixed costs, variable costs, irregular annual costs, and a spending allowance that does not require willpower. Built for uneven income if that is what you have.

A written safety net plan

How many months of expenses you need, where the money sits, how it gets there automatically, and the rules for when you are allowed to touch it.

A debt sequence, if you carry debt

Every balance, rate and minimum in one table, with a payoff order, a realistic finish date, and the arithmetic showing what each extra payment buys you.

One income route, started

Chosen against your skills, hours and risk tolerance — then set up: profile written, first offer defined, pricing set, first ten approaches sent.

A twelve-month review calendar

Dated checkpoints for what to look at each month and each quarter, so the plan survives contact with real life instead of decaying in a drawer.

Curriculum in brief

Four parts, taught in this order for a reason

Read the full week-by-week curriculum

  1. See the numbers

Tracking without shame. Categories that work for a real household. Reading a bank statement like an accountant. Net worth on one page. The difference between a cash-flow problem and an income problem — they need opposite treatments and are constantly confused.

  2. Stabilise

Budgeting methods and how to pick one you will not abandon. Irregular and seasonal income. Emergency funds sized by risk, not by round numbers. Debt: interest arithmetic, avalanche versus snowball, refinancing traps, and how to negotiate. Insurance as risk transfer, in plain terms.

  3. Earn

The full map of online income: services, products, marketplaces, content, and capital. For each: what skill it demands, how long until the first payment, what it really costs to start, how it fails, and who it suits. Then you choose one and set it up under supervision.

  4. Grow and protect

Pricing and raising rates. Getting paid across borders without losing a fifth to fees. Setting aside tax as it arrives instead of panicking later. Investing principles: compounding, diversification, cost drag, time horizon, and why almost every “guaranteed” offer aimed at beginners is a fraud. Fraud recognition as a permanent habit.

Income routes

Fourteen ways people actually earn online, examined honestly

Each route gets the same treatment: the skill it needs, the money it needs, the time before the first payment, the ceiling, and the specific way it usually goes wrong. Six are summarised here; the rest are on the routes page.

A

Freelance services

Writing, design, bookkeeping, editing, translation, virtual assistance. The fastest route to a first payment for most beginners because you sell time and skill rather than building an asset first.

B

Specialist consulting

Selling judgement rather than hours to a narrow audience you already understand from previous work. Slower to start, far better rates, and it compounds through referrals.

C

Digital products

Templates, courses, presets, printables, stock assets. Real work up front, small marginal cost afterwards. Fails mostly through building before anyone has asked for it.

Start-up cost lowFirst payment 2–6 monthsCeiling high
D

Content and audience

Video, newsletter, blog, podcast. The slowest and least predictable route, and the one most oversold. Worth doing when it supports another route rather than being the whole plan.

Start-up cost lowFirst payment 6–18 monthsCeiling very high
E

E-commerce and resale

Handmade goods, print on demand, arbitrage, secondhand resale. Genuine margins exist, but so does genuine inventory risk and a great deal of unglamorous logistics.

Start-up cost mediumFirst payment 1–3 monthsCeiling high
F

Micro-work and data tasks

Transcription, annotation, testing, surveys. Low pay per hour and no compounding, but useful as a bridge while a better route is being built. We are blunt about the arithmetic here.

Who it is for

Be honest with yourself before you pay

A good fit

  • You earn something already but have no idea where it goes
  • Your income is irregular and normal budgeting advice does not fit
  • You want a second income stream and have three to eight hours a week
  • You have tried freelancing platforms and got nowhere
  • You are carrying consumer debt and want a real payoff sequence
  • You are twenty-two and want to start correctly rather than fix it at forty
  • You are supporting family and need the plan to survive shocks
  • You are willing to show your real numbers to one person

A poor fit

  • You want a specific stock, coin or fund recommendation
  • You want a guaranteed income figure by a specific date
  • You expect earnings without any weekly work
  • You are looking for someone to trade or invest on your behalf
  • You want access to a “system” or bot that prints money
  • You are in acute financial crisis and need legal or debt-relief help first
  • You will not track spending for even two weeks
  • You want the recordings but will not do the assignments

How a week runs

Small, repeatable, and built around the time you actually have

A live teaching session on screen Handwritten notes and a printed worksheet A private mentoring call in progress

Before the session — about 30 minutes

You read a short brief and fill in one worksheet with your own figures. No pre-reading longer than four pages, ever.

The session — 60 or 90 minutes

Teaching for the first half, worked examples in the middle, and questions at the end. Group sessions are recorded from the slide side only, so nobody's private figures appear on tape.

After the session — 1 to 3 hours across the week

One assignment that produces a real document: a category map, a payoff table, a service offer, a pricing sheet. You submit it and get written comments back before the next session.

Between everything

A question channel that is answered on working days. Nobody is left stuck for a week over something that takes two sentences to unblock.

“I had three subscriptions I was paying for twice through different cards. That was week one. By week six I had sent forty pitches and signed two clients doing bookkeeping for small shops.”

“The part that changed things was the irregular income lesson. I stopped budgeting on my best month and started budgeting on my worst one. Everything got calmer.”

“I came in wanting to do dropshipping. I left doing translation work, which I was already good at, and earning within three weeks. Being talked out of the wrong route was the whole value.”

“Nine years of freelancing and I had never once set money aside for tax on the day I was paid. One rule, applied every time. That alone was worth the fee.”

Common questions

Asked before almost every cohort

All thirty-plus questions

Do I need to already be earning to take this?

No, but it helps. If you have no income at all, the first half of the course will still be useful for setting up habits, and the second half becomes your main focus. If you are in an emergency — rent due this week, no food money — a course is the wrong tool. Deal with the emergency first, then come back.

Will you tell me exactly how much I will earn?

No, and be very careful with anyone who does. We will show you what specific routes typically pay, how long they take to produce a first payment, and how to test a route cheaply before committing months to it. What you actually earn depends on your skill, your market and your effort.

Which language are the sessions in?

All sessions, materials and feedback are in English. Materials use plain, direct English rather than jargon, and every financial term is defined the first time it appears. There is also a glossary you can keep open.

What if I miss a live session?

Group sessions are recorded and posted within twenty-four hours, and you keep access for six months. One-to-one sessions can be rescheduled with at least twenty-four hours' notice; the policy is on the terms page.

Is any of this investment advice?

No. This is general financial education. We do not know your full circumstances, we are not licensed to advise you, and we never recommend a specific investment product. See the disclaimer.

Can I upgrade from the group course to one-to-one?

Yes. If you decide within the first three weeks, the group fee is credited against the one-to-one price and you pay the difference. After that a normal place is required.

Pick the format that matches how you learn

Group cohorts run every month and cap at twelve people. One-to-one places open a few at a time, because each one takes a fixed block of the week.

Not sure yet? Send a short note about your situation — how many hours a week you have, what you have already tried, and what you want money to do for you. You will get a straight answer about which format fits, or whether neither does.
